Roulette

The simple wheel game seen in casino houses is called roulette. It came from a French term that meant “little wheel.” Playing this game is very simple. Just bet on one or several numbers, a block of red or black numbers, or odd or even numbers. The winning number or color is determined by spinning the wheel and letting a ball spin in the opposite direction. The ball and wheel will soon come to a complete stop and the ball will fall into one of the slots with a specific number and color. That will be the winning color and number.

History

The very first wheel was created in the 18th century in France. The idea came from the primitive wheel that Blaise Pascal devised in the 17th century is connection with his research about perpetual motion machine. The conception of the modern roulette is said to have also come from various other wheel games like Roly-Poly, Reiner, Ace of Hearts and E.O.

There were hardly any revisions on the roulette game since 1796. It means the old game rules of 1796 are still being applied today in modern casinos. It was in 1796 when roulette was mentioned in the French novel entitled La Roulette by Jaques Lablee. The wheel had two zeroes plus the numbers 1 to 36. In 1843, another wheel was introduced this time with only one zero slot.

Today there are two major types of wheel used. The American wheel has two zero slots plus the numbers 1 to 36, while the European wheel has one zero slot only plus the numbers 1 to 36.

Rules

There are various betting options. If you go for an inside bet, it means you are betting on an exact number where the ball will land. Outside betting is putting your money or larger group options like betting on all the red or black numbers, or betting on all odd or even numbers. The payouts depend on the probability. For example, betting on just one number of out 37 possibilities is very risky and the odds of hitting the right number are low. Thus, the payout for this is the highest. Betting on odd or even numbers gives more or less 50% chances of getting it right. If you win, the payout will be lower.

Each table in a casino house imposes a certain minimum and maximum amount for betting. The rules apply separately for inside and outside betting. Thus if for example the minimum betting for a table is $5, a player should bet $5 inside or outside. He could not bet $3 inside and $2 outside.

Some casinos make use of separate table chips to distinguish inside betting from outside betting. All bets will be accepted until the wheel is not yet being spun. When the croupier finally spins, he will call out “No more bets!” and no more chips will be accepted on the table.

The croupier is the dealer who spins the wheel. Once the wheel stops, he will put a dolly on the winning number to mark it. While this dolly is on the table, no player could place chips, collect or remove any chips. The croupier then goes on to sweep losing bets using his hand or a device. After that, he determines the payouts to the winners. Winning chips remain on the table unless a player decides to stand up already to exchange his winnings for cash. Players make bets anew to begin the next round.

Number Sequence

The wheel has several pockets bearing the numbers 1 to 36. These numbers are color coded. Numbers in black are even numbers from 1 to 10, even numbers from 19 to28, odd numbers from 11 to 18, and odd numbers from 29 to 36. Numbers in red are odd numbers from 1 to 10, odd numbers from 19 to 28, even numbers from 11 to 18, and even numbers from 19 to 28.

Zero pockets are colored green. In an American roulette, there are 2 green zeroes marked 00. In European roulette, there is only 1 green zero slot marked 0. The numbers are marked in a clockwise manner.

Table Layout

The table layout is where actual betting is placed. It is located near the wheel itself. The layout can bear only one zero or two zeroes. Nowadays however, the American version with two zeroes is more commonly used in many casinos. The French version is commonly used only in Monte Carlo casinos.

Bets

There are two types of bets: inside bet and outside bets.

Inside bets

Inside bets are wagers on one or several numbers. A straight-up is a bet for only one number. To do this, place chips at the center of the number square in the table layout.

A split is a bet on two numbers adjoined on the layout. It can be adjoined vertically or horizontally. Example of a split bet is 14 and 17, and 8 and 9.

Betting on three numbers is called street. The numbers should fall in only one horizontal line. To bet on a street, place chips on the edge of the line of a number at the end of the line. It depends on the layout if on the left or right.

Betting on four numbers is called a corner or a square. Example is a quad bet for the numbers 11, 12, 14 and 15. Place chips on the intersection of the horizontal and vertical intersection of the placement of these numbers on the layout.

Inside bets can also be a combination of six or more numbers with appropriate placement of chips on the layout.

Outside Bets

Outside bets have smaller payouts because the chances of winning are higher. Many players opt for outside betting because it makes the game more exciting and entertaining. The high probability of winning in a round makes up for smaller payouts. There are many possible options for outside betting. You can bet on a color red or black. If the ball lands on any number bearing the color of your bet, you win. Another way is to bet on an even or odd number. If you bet on an even number and the ball lands on a 12 (or any even number), you win. Another type of outside betting is called dozen bets. It is placing bets for the numbers 1 to 12, 13 to 24, or 25 to 36. For column bets, place your wager on all the numbers in any of the three columns on the layout.
