There has been a long raging debate on whether every state of the European Union should have its own laws on gambling or whether all gambling related decisions are to be left to the European Commission. Earlier this year, a green paper was launched which voiced this concern. A liberal member of Parliament, Jurgen Creutzmann from Germany, suggested that the European Union should take over all decision making power regarding gambling laws. He is not in favor of a single law for governing gambling in all member states but he is in favor of closer cooperation amongst them.
This Parliament member held the view that while member states are not capable of regulating all areas of gambling on the Internet, there remains the need for unity among national regulatory bodies. Currently all member states of the European Union have their own independent laws on online gambling. However, borders cannot define gambling online. It is better that all the gambling that takes place within European Union states abide by certain common standards.
On the other hand, there is a group, which sees no need for any common regulation by European Union members and they are in favor of unregulated gambling. Some other sections strongly object to Internet gambling having been limited. They are of the opinion that gamblers must be given warning messages while there are some other sections who want restrictions to be imposed on online players. Following the September vote, a subsequent vote is expected to be conducted in the subsequent month.
