2013/2014 Schedule for WSOP Circuit Just Announced

Loyal fans and many players have been awaiting the release of the the World Series of Poker 2013/2014 circuit schedule. This time there will be 22 stops included on the world-famous poker tour. The new lineup shows that the tour is planning to return to several popular locations that were played in the past. Two new Ohio stops have been added and one stop in Montreal, Canada. It was also announced that all stops will have 12 events and that the winner of the Main Event, as well as the Casino Champion, will automatically earn bids into the forthcoming National Championship. The biggest change to the schedule is that the National Championship will happen in Atlantic City at Caesars Palace.

Some of the old favorites that were mentioned as being on this year’s circuit include well-know venues such as Harrah’s Tunica, Horseshoe Hammond, Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Harrah’s New Orleans as well as Los Angeles’ The Bicycle Casino.

As mentioned above, there are some new stops on the tour this time around. The two new Ohio stops will include one in Cincinnati that will take place during the early part of the season and a second stop in Cleveland in March.

You may recall that last year, the tour included a visit in Vancouver which took place in the River Rock Casino. This year the tour will also stop in Montreal, Canada in the middle of November.

Also mentioned above was the fact that the tour will have 12 ring events that take place over a 12 day period. This is the same as it was in the past. There will also be a variety of non-ring events. WSOP announced that the point system that has been used in the past for qualifying at-large players to compete at the National Championship has not changed this year. However, it was also announced that WSOP is planning to award an additional six seats through their WSOP.com online promotions. This will reduce at-large bids to only 50. Doyle Brunson Will Miss WSOP Tournament Play

On May 14, Doyle Brunson announced that he will not be playing in the upcoming tournament play for the WSOP (World Series of Poker) scheduled for this summer. Brunson is a 10-time WSOP gold bracelet winner, and the announcement came out via his Tweeter account. Brunson is now 79, and he said that his age was the major reason for this decision to abstain from this year’s competition.

Those who have followed Doyle over the last few years will not be surprised by this decision. Brunson has been playing less and less over the last few years in general, and has been playing in the big tournaments even less than that. For 2012, Doyle played in four events and in 2011 he played in only seven.

Doyle Brusnon is known as one of the original poker pros who attended the very first WSOP event back in 1971. He has always made time for it since, which is just one reason it has gained such popularity. It can be said that he has put his mark on poker and the WSOP especially. (Note: Professional player Johnny Chan is actually the first player to have won ten bracelets; this happened in 2005. Brunson went on to win his tenth bravelet later that same year.)

It was back in 2005, that Doyle Brunson was able to win his 10th golden bracelet. He did it beating everyone at No-Limit HoldEm (Short-Handed), $5000 event. This win earned him $367,800 which was the third largest win in long poker career.

In 2009, Brunson made it to 17th position when he played in the WSOP Europe (London) £10,000 Main Event. He was able to earn some £31,198 in that session. Doyle’s last cash win that took place in the US happened during the WSOP that was held earlier that same year. He was able to make it to the final table of Seven Card Stud Hi Lo $10,000 World Championship event. He came in seventh with winning of $62,234. Brunson’s first gold bracelets came back in 1976 when he won the $10,000 No-Limit Hold’em World Championship that also earned him $230,000 and he also won the 1976 $5,000 Deuce-to-Seven Draw at the same WSOP gathering. This earned him $80,250. Both cash wins seem meager to today’s winnings at the WSOP.

It is not known at this time if this recent decision to not play in the upcoming WSOP means he is retiring permanently, but if that turns out to be case, it is sure that he will be missed. Over the years, Doyle Brunson has earned a fan base that any poker player would be proud to have. Many of his loyal fans actually grew up watching him (and his big cowboy hat) on television, or they learned the inner workings of a winning game through his many writings and lessons. It can be said, and with a great deal of honesty, that Doyle Brunson, along with other notables such as Thomas Preston, aka Amarillo Slim”, made poker the popular game that it is.

Gus Hansen Earns Over $1 Million in Single Day

Poker super-star Gus Hansen did something remarkable in terms of online play recently. He was able to win over $1.5 Million in a single marathon session at FTP (Full Tilt Poker). The session took 19 hours to complete and lasted through the night. One remarkable aspect to this achievement is he was able to pull this off playing FLO8, which is another way of saying Fixed Limit Omaha Hi-Lo. While regular Pot Limit Omaha is gaining a lot speed at online poker establishments, nothing like this has happened in any Hi-Lo game.

Even though winning such a large amount of cash must have brought a smile to Hansen’s face, it is good to keep in mind that for the year, Gus Hansen is down more than $3 Million at FTP. Needless to say, this big win will go a long way in helping the Great Dane and his balance sheet. Gus is now down $1,498,844 for 2013, but he is not the top loser. That title belongs to Phil Ivey, who has lost some $2,297,409 in 2013 and has not been able to cash in the really big money this year as he has done in the past. But, no one is counting Ivey out just yet.

This impressive win for Gus Hansen started when he took $61,000 away from Kyle Ray at the Fixed Limit Omaha Hi-Lo table. Hansen then went on to add to his stack by pulling in $182,000 from Viktor Blom and Alexander Kostritsyn (a 2-7 triple draw). In no time at all, comparatively speaking, Gus was ahead to the tune of $500,000. At times, the Fixed Limit Omaha Hi-Lo table also included Phil Galfond, Kyle Hendon, and two other players. No one left the table with a profit except Hansen and Hendon who managed to win $200,000 in 2 hours of play that took 243 hands.

At the 19 hour mark, Hansen was left facing Ray at the FLO8 heads-up tables. It didn’t long before Ray was standing up for the last time. He had lost a $722,000.

The big losers at the Fixed Limit Omaha Hi-Lo table were Blom who handed over a whooping $627,533 that took some 2,138 hands and Alexander Kostritsyn who lost a tidy $578,778.

While it is true that the amount of cash Gus won is noteworthy, so is the sheer number of hands that were played during this 19 hour game. Imagine, at one point nearly 250 hands of poker were played in a mere 2 hours! This fast pace may have added to some of the players not playing at their finest level, or it may not have contributed. Those who have studied Hansen in the past know that he often likes to play fast, making his decisions in a fraction of time that his opponents take to make theirs. Who knows, this quick pace of play, especially at a Fixed Limit Omaha Hi-Lo table, may have benefited Gus a great deal, especially since it seems to have be been long-lasting over several hours.
